Kevin Fallon - Youth Football Coaching PDF Print E-mail

Tuesday, 09 February 2010

Kevin Fallon and Keith McKay have been with us for the 2009 season and have met a lot of the coaches and some of the players who have attended the various coaching clinics that have been run. We have reviewed the past season, had a look at the skill level of players through the age groups and looked at a small number of teams playing.

The main objective of the program will be to deliver qualitity players to our men and women's first teams. The academy will run a true academy course for boys on a Wednesday and girls on a Thursday.

Every year we will begin with a new group of 7 to 9 year olds who if well coached could lead to All Whites. The proposed academy coaches will ideally consist of Kevin Fallon, Keith McKay, Grant Robertson, Dave Priestly, Gordon Craig, Lee Jacques and Andy Leader for the boys. Keith McKay will head a group of coaches for the girls section of the club.

At Fencibles we propose to set 4 levels of youth coaching.

 1.   The first beginnings are the young players who just want to play and have fun; this is the basic element of football - playing for the fun of the game. When small children kick and run after the ball they are following their innate desire to move, leap, run and jump; all part of a healthy physical and mental development. The pleasure in playing with a ball grows in direct proportion to their increasing skills. This level Keith McKay and Kevin Fallon will run coach the coaches sessions in conjunction with Auckland Football Federation taking advantage of the Small Whites coaching clinics that are well run by the AFF. We will run these programs from Riverhills on a regular basis at the start of the season. Enabling coaches a better use of resources to pass on skills enabling players to develop the ability to dribble, pass and move the ball accurately. These sessions will be free of charge to our club coaches and members.

 2.   The second level is for those players who want to improve their skills and obtain extra coaching. These courses will be run be Keith Buzzer McKay. The session will be aimed at a more precise definition of football training, a methodically planed process with a goal to achieve performance and readiness of the individual player regardless of their current level. These sessions will be run over 8 week sessions through each of the four terms of the year. Their will be a cost for these clinics on a user pay. $50 per term is proposed. We will also create a team coaching structure for any teams who wish to enrol for these extra coaching clinics.

 3.   The third level will be sessions run for selected teams by our academy coaches throughout terms two and three. These sessions will be aimeed primarilly at the junior rep sides and the youth premier/metro sides. They will be coached once a week by their selected coaches then assisted by Kevin who will work with the coaches to run this program. High performance coach the coaches sessions will also be run on a monthly basis in order to improve the club coaches skill and knowledge of the game.

 4.   The fourth and top level of the programme will be the introduction of four true academy sides. The teams will be made up of players selected by their various coaches through the grades. Each coach is to nominate players with

  • Natural ability and techinques
  • Knowledge and awareness
  • Courage and bravery
  • Character and mental awareness
  • Speed and mobility
  • Anticipation

Spotting an outstanding player may seem easy and true talent is obvious, but in early years young players are unlikely to be blessed with all 6 distinctions.

These players will be placed into 4 teams of approximatley 16 players. Ideally including 2 goalkeepers the age groups will be...

  1. 7 & 8 year olds
  2. 9, 10 & 11 year olds
  3. 12, 13 & 14 year olds
  4. 15 & 16 year olds

Players over the age of 16 will be ready for involvement within senior football under the direction of Eddie and his coaches.

These sides will train on a Wednesday night for an 8 week programme during terms 1 and 4.This will allow the players to return to their respective teams during the playing season. These sessions will be run as a true Academy style under Kevin's programme. Cost is $70 per term which includes an academy T-shirt.
